My birthday is a week before Christmas. This creates gift stress in my family and has resulted in a large collection of scarves, jackets and sweaters in my wardrobe. Around eleven years ago, in December 2005 I was 36, had a 4 year old and a one year old who had just spent the year scaring the crap out of his family – when he wasn’t in the hospital he was screaming his little face off at home. I was exhausted, beaten down, in need of something just for me. I’m not much of spa person, I’ll get my nails done once and a while but chip them so quickly that it’s really just not worth it. Day spas leave me thinking of all the things I could be doing if I wasn’t sitting in this tub with too many other people. So when my husband posed the usual mid-December question in 2005 “what would you like for your birthday or Christmas” he didn’t get the usual, unhelpful response “I don’t know, nothing really”.
I said “a personal trainer”. Little did I know I was getting into more than just some fitness.
Although I had lived in Pemberton for 8 years before I arrived on Lindsay’s doorstep, I was not connected to the valley. My people were scattered from Whistler to St.John’s and my interactions with the people of Pemberton were the result of me being ‘Mike’s wife’ and then ‘Alyssa’s mother’. Joining this fitness family created relationships that did not involve my husband or his business. In the process I became me again. It was something that I hadn’t realized I was missing until I was no longer defined solely in relation to others. The 11 years of fitness has supported me through parenting toddlers, children and now teenagers. It has seen me through a Masters Degree, career transitions, and injuries. Over the years I have received countless gifts from my relationship with Lindsay, bananamay bodyworks, and now Kufuka Fitness & Jessica. Through this journey I have become stronger physically, more accepting of who I am mentally and allowed myself to finally embrace the BC fashion culture of wearing sweatpants out of the house. Shorts and Sorels at the grocery store - thanks Lindsay, they’ll never let me back in Montreal now.
I decided to try personal training just before my thirtieth birthday, hoping to improve my fitness going into my fourth decade. I have been lucky enough to have Lindsay as my personal trainer. The first session I knew absolutely nothing about going to the gym and was a bit apprehensive about the whole thing. However, after seeing the results of a month of working with Lindsay that changed quickly! Lindsay has been excellent at teaching me about normal eating habits, and her workouts have gotten me into the best shape of my life. She puts together workouts that match my needs as a gym newbie with limited gym access. I’ve found her to be super knowledgeable about both diet and fitness and I leave my training sessions feeling inspired! I would heartily recommend contacting Kufuka Fitness if you are serious about getting into shape.
Lindsay May is a truly excellent trainer. She is the perfect combination of tough ("Lindsay, you are KILLING me!") and warm ("Shannon, you are doing SO well"), and she works with the whole person -- mentally, emotionally and physically. Because of her efforts, I am stronger and more flexible, I have better balance and most importantly, working out has become fun. I recommend her without reservation."
I initially joined one of Lindsay’s group fitness classes 7 plus years ago in an effort to lose weight. While I was able to achieve, and maintain, that goal, it became a secondary benefit. Of greater value was learning to balance a healthy lifestyle through, amongst other things, the combination of fitness and nutrition.
Lindsay, and the Kufuka team, have helped me transition from being a couch potato into someone who aims to incorporate some form of fitness activity into a daily routine. I’ve been able to succeed in activities that I never would have had an interest in, nor would I have thought possible for me to accomplish. Additionally, I have a new perspective on how to properly fuel my body to be able to help me in all facets of life (…it’s not about eating like a rabbit, just eating consciously!).
The most important thing that I’ve learned in the time I’ve taken classes with Lindsay, and the Kufuka team, is that gaining a healthier lifestyle is fun! I’ve met incredible people, formed new friendships, laugh during every workout, and have a better outlook in general (except for Burpees … still pretty down on them!).
Thanks Lindsay and Kufuka … you rock!
I am so happy that Kufuka Fitness came into my life. I am a mom of two young children and was having trouble finding the time and the motivation to take care of myself. I have always been active but found it quite hard to lose the extra weight after my second child. Jessica and Lindsay encouraged, supported and motivated me to get strong again. I started to notice changes in my body shape and strength within a couple of weeks of joining. The small group sessions are a perfect environment to meet great people but to also get the individual attention that everyone wants without individual training sessions. The location is central and they have lots of equipment to keep things interesting. Lindsay and Jessica have a great knowledge of exercises and plans to keep each workout different and satisfying. I am sad that I have to leave to leave the Kufuka community temporarily however I know that one of the first things I will do upon returning is sign up for more workouts!!!
Team kufuka has been a great addition to my life. I've been working out with them for almost three months and I feel energized. I haven't felt this strong for years. Thanks team kufuka.
Jordan and I both sort of dared each other to take up the challenge - that's what got us started. By the second week we were getting used to not only a new way of eating but also the recording and reporting of our daily intake and activity. This was a vital component of the challenge - knowing that you're going to have to tell all really helps to keep you on track. By the end of the challenge, I had lost about 13lbs - not enough to win but that didn't matter. For me, I was looking better and feeling better ... that's what mattered. Everyone should know that this 6 week program is very "doable" and if you're serious about wanting to look and feel better, you can be assured of some pleasing results. I highly recommend it!.
My recollection is that Trish bought me a TBT series for Christmas so that I could join her in the competition and after I had been too long lounging on the couch complaining of a sore back. For me the TBT revelation is that at the end of the day its pretty simple. Calories in and calories out. Appreciating what you eat and what you do. You can be in control.Lindsay did a great job of coaching, helping me develop a fitness routine and a better appreciation of the food /fitness balance. Which is important to a person that loves food.
It really did change my life. Thanks Lindsay.
3 1/2 years ago when my kids were 4 and 2 years old, I had a chronic headache that lasted 6 weeks. I tried everything to combat the headache and many things helped it along, but nothing made it go away completely. With the help of my amazing physiotherapist, massage therapist and my personal trainer, Jessica Turner, my headache finally went away. I realized with Jess's help that some crucial muscles weren't working effectively. I worked out with Jess 2 mornings a week from 6-7am for 3 years. She saw me through many highs and lows (in fitness and life). It was a defining moment in time for me. I hold my body differently now. I am more aware of the muscles that need to be strengthened in order to have better posture to support my neck. I rarely get headaches anymore. I am no longer able to do those early morning workouts because of family commitments, but I am transitioning to evening workouts. I believe that strength training is essential to leading a pain-free life. There will always be setbacks, but with the help of a personal trainer, they can guide you through those rough spots.
To me right now, my health and wellness is some of the most important work I need to focus on. And yes, sometimes it is "work". There are so many layers and aspects to this - from the longevity of my Grandpa (wanting that for myself), to the unhealthy choices of people I am influenced by, to my own roller coaster ride of injury and recovery. In the last few months, I've just felt it is time to stop sleepwalking through this life. I want it to be rich, full, intense. And part of that is keeping this body alive and humming along and energized. So started back at early risers (even though I suck at mornings) - and shifted my mindset to be more like "I'm a morning person". Started to really enjoy the workouts (and having a workout DONE before the day even starts), so just kept signing up and plan to just keep signing up into the future. Then I did a free 21 Oprah/Deepak meditation challenge. Then I signed up for an ayruveda based course - and am resonating so much with some new, daily healthy habits. And I am starting a 21-day, 20 min a day yoga challenge in the new year. I am saying yes to anything that is going to feed my body, mind and soul. This is the stuff I have complete control over right now and it is moving me forward in so many ways. I am feeling stronger, brighter, healthier, more energy. I am feeling more loving, forgiving and less judgy. There is a quote I read recently that I think lit the fire under my ass: "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming 'Wow! What a ride?' - Hunter S Thompson
And to do all of these in a community with the resources, services, talent, support is truly an amazing gift!!!
Love you guys
